Deposit limits: where to find them, how to size them, and why beforehand
Italian licensed betting accounts include player-set limits. Where to find them, how to size them against a real budget, and why they have to be set beforehand rather than after.

A deposit limit is the maximum you can pay into your betting account over a given period — daily, weekly or monthly depending on the operator. It is a feature of the licensed account, not a concession.
The reason it works isn't that it stops you playing: it is that it moves the decision to a moment when you are clear-headed. A limit set calmly holds until you change it — and on how it is changed, which is the part that matters, see the caveat below.
Where to find them
In the account section for responsible gambling or limits, reachable from your personal area. The names differ between operators — «Play limits», «Responsible gambling», «Self-limitation» — and so does where the setting sits. If you can't find it, the right place to ask is the operator's support, not a search engine.
⚠ The general rule, still worth checking in each operator's terms, is that lowering a limit takes effect immediately while raising it requires a waiting period. That is deliberate: it makes an increase a decision taken in advance rather than in the moment you'd want it.
How to size it
The useful criterion starts from your budget, not from your betting. Pick a figure that, if you lost all of it every month for twelve months, would change nothing about your life. That is the figure: not the one you think you could win back, and not the one matching what you've staked so far.
The second criterion is the period. A monthly limit leaves room to spend it all on one bad day; a daily or weekly limit spreads it, and is more effective precisely on the days when it matters.
⚠ A deposit limit isn't a loss limit. If you win and keep playing the winnings, the limit doesn't intervene: it governs what goes into the account, not what circulates inside it.
Why beforehand and not after
Because the moment a limit is needed is exactly the moment you wouldn't want to set one. After a run of losses the pull to win it back is strong, and each individual increase feels reasonable: that is the chasing mechanism, and it is the hardest thing to see from inside.
A log makes it visible: if average stake grows after the bad days, chasing is there. It is a simple check, and it only requires having written the bets down. There is an arithmetic reason to set the limit rather than wait to see whether «it's going well»: with a true 2% edge at odds of 2.00 it takes around 9,600 bets for return to separate from zero, and after a hundred bets the margin of error is ±19.6 points. Over the span in which someone would decide to raise a limit, the data says nothing yet.
The other tools
- Temporary self-exclusion, to step away for a defined period without closing the account.
- Indefinite self-exclusion, which goes through the register held by ADM and applies across every licensed operator at once.
- The account's betting history, where it exists: the quickest way to see how much passed through in a month, and it is usually a different number from the one you have in mind.
- ⚠ And the national gambling helpline, if the problem is bigger than an account setting.
The exact conditions — which periods, with what timing, through what procedure — are set by each operator within ADM's rules, and should be read there. They differ between operators and change over time.
