Serie A, the round in numbers: form, head-to-heads and margins

Ten matches between Friday 18 and Sunday 20 September. For each we measured four things: position and points, recent form, head-to-head records from our archive, and how much each operator holds back on the full-time result. No tips, and no price written into the text: odds move by the hour, and they live in the table further down, which fills from the feed when you open the page.

How much the book holds back, operator by operator

The margin is what the operator holds back across the sum of the three outcomes: the only number that compares two books without depending on who is playing. Across these ten matches:

Netwin is the cheapest on all ten matches, without exception. The distance between dearest and cheapest is not the same everywhere, though: it runs from 2.01 points on Milan-Lecce to 3.77 points on Roma-Inter, almost double.

Today's table won't be Friday's

These figures are a snapshot taken on 14 September, and three matches are played on that very day: Como-Parma, Torino-Roma and Inter-Udinese. Six of the twenty sides we discuss take the field before the round we're previewing, so the positions and points quoted below will change.

Roma-Inter: the table says one thing, the head-to-head another

As of the 14 September snapshot Roma are second and Inter third, both on nine points. Roma are on a run of five consecutive Serie A wins — two of them, though, at the close of last season: they have played three matches in this one. They have scored 3.33 goals per game and conceded 0.33, the most extreme averages of the round in both directions.

The head-to-head tells the opposite story: across the last six meetings the archive holds, Inter won five and Roma one. But those six run from February 2022 to February 2024, and one is a Coppa Italia tie, not a league match.

Frosinone-Como: four meetings, all in Serie B

Frosinone and Como arrive level on seven points, seventh and sixth, with Como having played a match fewer. The head-to-head holds nothing that helps place them, and it's worth saying why.

The four meetings the archive holds are all Serie B fixtures, between September 2021 and February 2023. In the history we hold, these two sides have never met in Serie A: a record of three Frosinone wins and one for Como belongs to another division and two different squads.

The other eight, briefly

• Monza-Sassuolo (Fri 18, 20:45) — Monza have 1 point from four rounds; across the four meetings in the archive, all Serie A between 2023 and 2024, they have never lost.
• Bologna-Torino (Sat 19, 15:00) — Bologna score 0.5 goals per game and have 1 point; across the last six meetings, all league fixtures, they are unbeaten: four wins and two draws.
• Udinese-Cagliari (Sat 19, 15:00) — Cagliari are fourth in the table with 9 points from four rounds, and have taken 12 points from their last five Serie A matches, the oldest of which was last season. Six meetings since November 2023, five in Serie A and one in the Coppa Italia. It carries the lowest Betsson margin of the round, 5.82%.
• Venezia-Lazio (Sat 19, 20:45) — bottom against top: four defeats in four and no points for Venezia. It is also the most expensive match on Betsson at 7.20% and on Betflag at 7.60%.
• Fiorentina-Napoli (Sun 20, 12:30) — Fiorentina concede 2.75 goals per game. Six meetings, all Serie A: three Napoli wins, two draws, one for Fiorentina.
• Parma-Genoa (Sun 20, 15:00) — Parma score 0.33 goals per game, the lowest figure of the round. Of the six meetings in the archive, two are Serie B: the three-draw record isn't all top-flight.
• Juventus-Atalanta (Sun 20, 18:00) — across the last six meetings, five in Serie A and one in the Coppa Italia, Juventus have never lost: three wins and three draws.
• Milan-Lecce (Sun 20, 20:45) — five Milan wins in the last six, all league fixtures. It is the match where the three operators sit closest together: 2.01 points apart.

How to read these numbers

Two caveats. With three or four rounds played, goal averages are fragile: 3.33 goals per game across three games isn't a rate, it's the effect of one rout. And the form sequence looks at a team's most recent Serie A matches within the last 120 days, so early in the season it includes the tail of the previous one — where it does, we wrote it next to the figure.

Head-to-head records come from the openfootball archive and cover every competition, cups and lower divisions included: on five of this round's ten matches the meetings quoted are not all Serie A, and in each case we said so. «The last six» means the six most recent the archive holds, not every match ever played: there are 24 between Juventus and Atalanta, 21 between Roma and Inter.
