International break: when the leagues resume (and what is left in the listing)

The leagues come back on 9 October in Spain, Germany and France, and on 10 October in Italy and England. The Champions League returns on 13 October, the Europa League and the Conference League on the 15th. In between there are 18 days without a single match from the eight competitions that, around here, are «football»: 21 September to 8 October, inclusive.

It is not an empty stretch, though. Inside those 18 days our listing carries 340 matches, and the most numerous of the 79 competitions present is the Nations League, which in two and a half weeks plays 104 of the 156 matches of its group stage. The listing has opened 24, all in the first of the two windows — 24 to 28 September; the October one is not open yet. What is missing is not the matches but the main market: on 20 September 2026, across the 24 Nations League matches listed, not one had the 1X2 open at all three operators.

When each competition comes back

ESPN calendar, read on 20 September 2026 and counted across September and October. All five domestic leagues close on the same day, 20 September, and reopen at two speeds: Spain, Germany and France on the Friday, Italy and England on the Saturday. ⚠ The dash on the Conference League is not a zero: its single-table phase starts on 15 October, so before the break there was nothing yet to interrupt.

The listing does not empty out: it changes shape

On 20 September 2026 the listing held 537 matches in all, and 340 of them fell inside the 18 days of the break. Of those 340, none belonged to the eight competitions in the table above. In their place there are 79 different competitions, nearly all of them small.

⚠ This is a photograph, not a constant. The listing changes several times a day, and two readings on the same evening do not give the same total. That is why the reading is frozen in a file, and the date of 20 September 2026 stands for every figure here, the table included: redo the count with scripts/verifica-sosta-nazionali.mjs. ⚠ Half those numbers are steady and half are not: in two hours one book's covered matches went from 245 to 275, while the 2, the 13 and the 21 did not move.

The match is there, the market is not

Here is the thing you only see by looking at the feed. The Nations League matches sit in the listing and the book that forms its backbone knows about them — but on 20 of the 24 it sends no price at all on any of the six markets we compare. And those 20 are, across the whole listing of 20 September 2026, the only 20 of 537 that arrive like that from that book: without one price of its own among the six. Matches where none of the three sends anything: exactly one. The feed returns an event only if at least one market we ask for is open: something is open on those matches. It just is not the 1X2. And it is not a gap shared by all: each book has it, on different matches.

The ranking turns upside down. Betsson, the backbone of the comparison across the whole listing, drops to 2 matches out of 24 on the Nations League; Netwin, the operator with the narrowest coverage of the three, prices 21 of them. The result is that the three-way comparison — the thing that makes a page like ours worth opening — did not exist on those 24 matches: 13 had two books, 10 had a single one, and one, Austria - Kosovo, had no 1X2 anywhere. Across the whole listing, at the same moment, 200 matches carried all three prices.

Why a book opens dozens of derived markets and not the main one, we do not know. Several explanations are plausible — a listing built on a source that arrives later for national teams, a risk decision, a plain publishing delay — and there is no way to tell them apart from the outside. What we can give is the count, with the day it was taken.

The table is all zeros, and the arithmetic still works

The Nations League table exists — 14 groups, 54 national teams — but every row shows zero matches played and zero points, because the edition is starting now. There is nothing to read in there, and anyone drawing a pecking order from it would be describing alphabetical order. The structure, though, says something checkable: twelve groups of four teams and two of three, home and away, make 156 matches. The ESPN calendar, which knows nothing about our table, lists 156 distinct ones. Two independent routes, the same number.

Those 156 sit in three windows of 52 matches each: 24 to 29 September, 1 to 6 October, then 12 to 17 November. The first two both fall inside the break, which is why this one runs 18 days instead of the eleven people are used to: it holds two international rounds back to back, not one.

Four years ago, the same days

The shape repeats, and the archive records it. Of the 2022 Nations League the archive holds 168 rows, but six carry no result: Russia's, suspended from that edition and never on the pitch. So 162 were played, 53 of them between 21 and 27 September 2022, across seven days. In those same seven days the five big leagues played nothing at all: all five had closed on 18 September 2022, and came back on 30 September in Germany, France and Spain, on 1 October in Italy and England. The same one-day stagger between the Friday and the Saturday you can see now.

On the far side of the break the calendar is provisional

One last thing that only shows up when two sources sit side by side. The 10 Serie A matches the listing had already opened for the round after the break were all ten on the same day, 11 October, and all at the same time, 15:00. ESPN spreads them over three days — 10, 11 and 12 October — and over five different kick-off times. The pairings are the same ten in both sources; the day matches on 5 of the 10, and day and time together on 2. When a book does not yet have the official kick-off time, it parks the match in a conventional slot: that is a placeholder, not an announcement, and a calendar three weeks out should be read knowing it.

What can be said, and what cannot

• It can be said when play resumes: the dates in the table come from a source outside our own listing, and the two sources agree on who plays.
• It can be said that during the break the comparison between books thins out, and by how much: on a measurement taken on one precise day, with the count reproducible.
• ⚠ It cannot be said why the main market stays shut: that is the part of the story invisible from outside, and filling it with a plausible explanation would mean inventing it.
• ⚠ And nothing can be said about tonight's match: how many markets are open right now changes by the hour, and the table above carries a date for that reason.
