Europa League, the matchday in numbers: what we can measure and what we can't

On Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 September the Europa League league phase opens: eighteen matches, thirty-six teams. This isn't a preview like the others, and it's worth saying why straight away.

On matchday one almost everything we use doesn't exist

Our previews rest on four measurements: league position, recent form, head-to-head record and the book's margin. On this matchday, three of the four aren't there.

The league-phase table exists as a table, but all thirty-six sides have zero points and zero matches played: that table is in alphabetical order, not order of merit. Anyone using it would write sentences like «fourth against thirty-first» that look like information and aren't. Form within the competition doesn't exist by definition, because nothing has been played. And head-to-head records are missing on all eighteen matches: our archive, which covers domestic leagues well, doesn't hold the history of these European pairings.

We also checked the obvious workaround — using each club's form in its own domestic league — and discarded it after measuring it. Of thirty-six sides, only seven have at least three matches in the archive dated 1 August 2026 or later. Of the other twenty-nine, five don't appear in the archive at all, one stops in 2023, eight in 2024, twelve in 2025, and three reach 2026 but with too few recent matches. Seven out of thirty-six isn't a measurement, it's a list of exceptions.

What we can measure: how much the books hold back

Read on 14 September 2026 at 16:26 Italian time, across the eighteen matches of the matchday. Netwin is cheapest on fifteen of the sixteen matches it prices; the exception is Crystal Palace-Lech Poznan, where it is the dearest of the three. On Levski Sofia-Salzburg Netwin doesn't price and the cheapest is Betflag; on Hapoel Be'er Sheva-Dinamo Zagreb only Betsson prices.

The figure you don't see in domestic leagues

Here the three operators sit very close together. Across the sixteen matches all three price, the distance between dearest and cheapest runs from 0.41 points on Milan-Benfica to 1.73 points on Olympiacos-Jagiellonia Bialystok.

To see how little that is, compare it with the same hours of league football, measured the same way: on the Ligue 1 round the narrowest spread is 5.62 points and the widest 6.69 points; in Serie A it reaches 3.77 points and in the Premier League 3.18 points. In the European tie the maximum is 1.73 points — less than a third of the French minimum.

The compression comes from both sides. Netwin, which across domestic leagues sits between Serie A's 4.03% and LaLiga's 4.99%, rises here to 6.02%: its highest margin of any competition we measure. Betsson, which sits at 10.59% in Ligue 1, drops here to 6.59%. The advantage of choosing your book, on these matches, is worth far less than on a league round.

Why that happens, our data doesn't say, and we're not going to invent it.

The two Italian sides

Milan host Benfica on Wednesday at 21:00: it is the match where the three operators agree most closely of the sixteen they all price, 0.41 margin points between dearest and cheapest. Juventus host NEC Nijmegen on Thursday at the same time, with a spread of exactly one point.

We won't write more, and that isn't modesty: between these sides we have no head-to-head record, and a table on zero points separates nobody. The current odds are below.

What we'll be able to read on matchday two

From matchday two onwards the league-phase table will start to say something, and form within the competition will exist. Head-to-heads won't: those stay absent until these sides have met often enough to leave a trace in the archive.

In the meantime, what we can say we have said, and what we can't we have written down. It beats filling eighteen paragraphs with adjectives.
